Why redact a PDF
Before sending a statement, a contract or a supporting document, you sometimes need to remove sensitive information from PDF files: an account number, an address or a name. A simple black rectangle placed in an editor isn't enough: the text stays underneath and can be copied or recovered. When you redact PDF content here, the text, images and drawings under each area are actually removed from the file.
You draw the areas in your browser, then the PDF is sent to our servers for removal. The "Also remove metadata" option, checked by default, also erases the author, the software and the creation dates. Review the result before sending it, to make sure nothing important slipped past your areas.
Frequently asked questions
Are my files safe?
They are processed on our servers and deleted as soon as the redacted PDF is sent back to you. Nothing is kept, viewed or shared.
Can redacted text be recovered?
No. The text, images and drawings under each area are removed from the file, not just covered. There's nothing left to copy or extract.
Why also remove metadata?
It can reveal the author, the software used and the creation dates. The option is checked by default, and you can uncheck it.
Can I black out text in PDF files on several pages?
Yes. Draw as many areas as you need, on any page of the document.
Do I need an account?
No. LordOfThePDF works without signing up and without an email address.
